Teen Group Therapy

The teen years tend to be characterized by raging hormones, lack of impulse control, big feelings and friendship drama. When in reality, teens are just being who they are and doing the things they know to do. With the help of trained therapists to guide the process and the connection with other peers their age, your teen can turn their overwhelm into possibility and aimlessness into purposeful action. It’s not quite friendship therapy, but your teen will find a place where they can connect and vulnerably share with others, creating the meaningful relationships they crave.

Our group therapy sessions are best known for being a supportive environment where teens want to come to. Our customized curriculum combines yoga, mindfulness, creative expression, and talk therapy to help unlock your teens potential and help them gain clarity in their lives that inevitably serves to propel them powerfully into their young adult lives with satisfying relationships—with themselves, with family members, in romantic relationships, and beyond.

Teen Group Therapy

Why Group?

Connection is key.

Groups are especially helpful for teens because their primary source of influence at this stage of their development is their peer group. This is a normal developmental milestone and one that can cause a lot of friction at home when parent’s do not approve or have concerns about who their teen is hanging out with.

Now is the time to learn resilience. When we give ourselves the space to learn healthy coping skills and explore our inner world with others we trust, confidence and adaptability grow. This is the kind of environment we’re proud to cultivate for teenagers at The Flourishing Way.

Many of our teen clients come to us after a setback such as divorce, relationship therapy, a death in the family, or another big loss. We also help teens through school changes, breakups, relationship counseling, and any other change that feels challenging. We’ll help your teen process what happened and learn healthy coping skills so they can step into adulthood with confidence.

Teens now, more than ever, need a safe space to discover who they are.

Meet your group leader, Emily Elkins

LPC- Associate, RYT | Supervised by Jill Ahrens Tucker LPC-S

Emily Elkins, LPC-Associate, is passionate about helping girls build confidence from the inside out and develop a stronger sense of who they are during some of the most formative years of their lives.

Having grown up in Houston and attended private school herself, Emily understands many of the unique pressures girls can face during the middle and high school years. Academic expectations, changing friendships, comparison, social pressure, body image, anxiety, and the desire to fit in can make it difficult to hear your own voice, much less trust it.

Emily also knows personally what it is like to look back on adolescence and realize there were tools she simply didn’t know she needed at the time. Her own experiences eventually led her to yoga, community, self-expression, and a deeper understanding of the importance of self-trust. After beginning her professional life in another career, Emily ultimately found her way to counseling and discovered a passion for helping girls and women develop these tools earlier in life.

As both a therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher, Emily brings a mind-body approach to her work. She believes girls benefit from having more than just a place to talk. They need opportunities to move, connect, express themselves, practice new skills, and experience what it feels like to be part of a supportive community.

Emily’s style is warm, genuine, curious, and approachable. She takes the challenges girls face seriously without believing that the work always has to feel serious. She wants group to be a place where girls can laugh, be themselves, talk about the things that actually matter to them, and realize they aren’t the only ones figuring it all out.

At the heart of Emily’s work is a desire to help girls strengthen their confidence, self-worth, boundaries, and voice so they can move through adolescence with a greater sense of self-trust and feel more comfortable being exactly who they are.
